Summary
In collaboration with the Chief of Athlete Wellness, in accordance with all USA Gymnastics policies, including medical staff policies, provide high-level oversight and direction of all medical programming, policies and procedures for all disciplines in support of sustained excellence in sports performance at USAG activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direction in strategic planning for health and wellness priorities.
  • Provide physician oversight of USAG medical initiatives.
  • Lead development and promotion of policies and position statements surrounding athlete sports medicine initiatives using available evidence-based medicine and sports medicine best practices. Policies shall have a focus on wellness, safety, and excellence of athletes.
  • Provide input on requirements/roles/responsibilities for medical personnel.
  • Contribute to the development of protocols and provide final approval of protocols for medical care.
  • Serve as physician spokesperson for USAG on medical issues.
  • Participate in and provide guidance to the USAG Athlete Health and Wellness Council.
  • Provide input as requested on Safe Sport medical complaints.
  • Review medical partnership proposals in conjunction with Chief of Athlete Wellness and other relevant personnel to determine suitability of partnership with USAG.
  • Establish standing orders for licensed medical personnel providing team coverage.
  • Provide prescriptions as appropriate for emergency Epi-Pens, emergency Inhalers, medications, or other prescription items as needed and approved for teams.
  • Facilitate the ordering of medications for team physician event and camp supplies.
  • Facilitate and order laboratory analyses for National Team athletes, upon request.
  • Perform as a physician event medical director during assigned events, placing athlete well-being, health, and safety at the forefront of decision-making. Health care includes injury prevention, emergency care, examination and evaluation of injuries and illnesses, developing and applying care plans.
  • Attend and provide services during yearly multi-disciplinary national team events.
  • Consult on RTP decisions in accordance with the Return-To-Gymnastics Medical Clearance policy.
  • Review and consult on emergency action plans and medical preparations for events and camps.
  • Maintain active licensure and compliance with medical/legal requirements for the state of residence.
  • Maintain current knowledge in area of specialty via continuing education, review of medical literature and continuous learning, consistent with requirements for certification/licensure.
  • Work and/or consult with national team physician(s) and leadership on operational and clinical issues/strategies and facilitate implementation of case management strategies.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with USAG, IOC, FIG, WADA, and USADA policies, and the Olympic Code to provide for maximum athlete health and safety, as well as sports performance.
  • Maintain SafeSport certification.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining professional working relationships with sports performance partners, the USOPC and other outside parties.
  • Provide education and conduct training on pertinent topics to coaches at regional and/or national congresses as mutually agreed upon.
  • Coordinate and execute special projects and other duties as mutually agreed upon.
  • Must remain professional and use good clinical decision making in high stress/high pressure situations.
  • Must maintain compliance with all USAG policies and procedures, while on assignment.
  • Attend and participate in routine medical staff and medical leadership meetings.
  • Participate in the bi-annual medical staff review process including evaluation of the skillset of contracted physicians.
  • Conduct regular telephone or virtual meetings with USAG Chief of Athlete Wellness and/or Medical Coordinator, and other relevant USAG leadership as needed.
Requirements:
  • MD or DO with unrestricted license to practice and board certified in area of specialization, if any
  • CPR and AED certification
  • Experience/advanced education in Sports Medicine
  • Fundamental knowledge of on-field emergency care (concussion, cardiac emergencies, spinal emergencies)
  • Working knowledge of musculoskeletal injuries, medical conditions and psychological issues affecting the athlete
  • Maintain USAG Professional Membership which includes Safe Sport certification and background check
  • Complete Stanford or ADEL Anti-Doping training prior to first assignment
Strongly Preferred:
  • Sports Medicine board certification from ACGME/AOA
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
  • Complete USADA/WADA online training
Responsibilities
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines for release of protected health information
  • Follow all policies, procedures and protocols adopted by USAG for medical personnel
