All three senior groups secured a spot on the podium in their divisions at the 2023 Maia World Cup in Portugal over the weekend. 2022 World all-around champions Angel Felix (Moreno Valley, Calif./Realis Gymnastics Academy) and Braiden McDougall (Riverside, Calif./Realis Gymnastics Academy) successfully defended their 2022 Maia World Cup men's pair all-around title with a 28.700 ahead of pairs from host country Portugal (28.660) and Kazakhstan (28.430).
Reigning U.S. all-around women's pair champions Mo Arthur (Rolla, Mo./Mid America Acro Tumbling) and Ariana Katsov (Owensville, Mo./Mid America Acro Tumbling) earned bronze with a 27.050, outdone only by first-place Israel (28.660) and second-place Germany (27.360). Also 2022 U.S. all-around champions, the group from Emilia's Acro Gymnastics and Cheer comprised of Mariam Tutberidze (Owings Mills, Md.), Grace Vonder Haar (Laurel, Md.) and Kayla Vonder Haar (Laurel, Md.) rounded out the women's group podium with a 28.410 behind Portugal (29.360) and Ukraine (28.550).
In addition to World Cup competition, junior teams represented the U.S. at the Maia International Acro Cup where they picked up five medals on Sunday. The 2022 U.S. all-around silver medalist women's pair of Maya Lissenkova (Las Vegas, Nev./AGC Las Vegas) and Bernice Moshos (Las Vegas, Nev./AGC Las Vegas) clinched gold for their combined routine in the 12-18 division.
Lissenkova and Moshos led the 12-18 women's pair field with a 26.320 ahead of British pairs in second (26.260) and third (26.250). In the mixed pair division, Hailee Wong (Colton, Calif./Realis Gymnastics Academy) and Andrew Castro (Riverside, Calif./Realis Gymnastics Academy) earned bronze with a 26.690 behind pairs from Portugal (27.150) and Britain (26.950).
The new 13-19 women's pair made up of 2022 World Age Group all-around silver medalist Olivia Green (Silver Spring, Md./Xtreme Acro) and 2022 World Age Group all-around bronze medalist Allyson Stone (San Antonio, Texas/Xtreme Acro) claimed silver in their division at MIAC. The pair's 27.710 was edged out by Ruzanna Vecheruk and Anhelina Cherniavska of Ukraine who scored a 27.880. Vlad Studwell (Henderson, Nev./AGC Las Vegas) and Davis Leavitt (Henderson, Nev./AGC Las Vegas) did the same in men's pair competition with a 26.520, bested only by Britain's Sidney Baker and Owen Nickless who claimed gold with a 28.540.
Also in the finals were the 12-18 women's group of Avery Puleo (Arnold, Md./International Elite), Madeline Hunt (Crownsville, Md./International Elite) and Anna Sullivan (Brookeville, Md./International Elite) and the 13-19 women's group with Ayla Vargas (San Antonio, Texas), Hannah Davis (San Antonio, Texas) and Gabriella Vathy (San Antonio, Texas), all of Acrobatic Gymnastics of San Antonio. Both groups landed just off the podium in their divisions with a 26.250 and 26.300, respectively.
A 12-18 junior team gold was also awarded to the women's pair of Lissenkova and Moshos, the mixed pair of Wong and Castro and the women's group of Roni Azzerad (Rockville, Md./Xtreme Acro), Isabella Collazo (Great Falls, Va./Xtreme Acro) and Audrey Wang (Rockville, Md./Xtreme Acro). The medal was given to the 12-18 team with the most combined points from balance and dynamic qualifications. Scores were taken from each country's top teams in each division.
