U400:
Developing Professionalism in New Coaches

Course Description

This is a live, hands-on training course designed for recreational and competitive coaches between the ages of 18-22 with 1-3 years' experience.

Through guided discussion coaches will explore 5 important topics faced daily while coaching and interacting with athletes and their parents.

This course provides a safe space for asking tough questions and learning how to move forward to better coaches.

The course will be offered LIVE at the 2023 Region 5, 7, and National Congresses this summer for free, and FOOD will be provided. Course will not conflict with any congress lecture, so participants can enjoy both the congress and the course.

Course Outline:

  1. Philosophy and Power of Coaching:
    1. Establishing your personal coaching philosophy and roadblocks to maintaining that philosophy
    2. Understanding the power of a coach and how the athlete and parent view that power
  2. Communication
    1. Active listening skills when talking with an athlete
    2. Active listening skills when talking with a parent sharing a concern
    3. Overview of why misunderstandings occur with youth
  3. Nurturing Athletes
    1. The importance of the club as a safe space with a focus on building self-confidence no matter how the athlete presents themselves
    2. Basics of how emotionally abusive practices impact the athlete's mental health
  4. Class Management:
    1. Planning and time management
    2. Setting goals for the class and for the individual
    3. Managing "surprises" such as not enough students showing up, behavior problems, student lateness, assistant coach not showing up, etc.
  5. Protective Practices
    1. Basic risk management concepts
    2. Safely interacting with minors

Policies

  • Pre-registration can be done online up to 48 hours prior to the live course. Pre-registration can also be done by mail or fax and must be received two weeks prior to the course.

USA Gymnastics University

  • Upon completion of the course, members can print out a certificate of course completion on their USA Gymnastics "My Profile" page. Note: 1-2 weeks for the certificate to become available once course has been completed.
