U400:
Developing Professionalism, Communication and Athlete-Centered Environments

This course equips new and developing coaches with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in their role. Participants will explore core coaching principles, including philosophy, the balance of power and responsibility, and effective verbal and nonverbal communication. The curriculum emphasizes social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, and strategies for fostering athlete confidence. Coaches will leave with practical tools to create positive, supportive training environments, encourage athlete growth, and adopt the professional mindset essential for long-term success in the sport.

Topics covered include coaching philosophy; power and responsibility; active listening; nonverbal communication; social emotional learning; building athletes’ self-confidence; trauma-informed coaching; creating environments that foster self-motivation; and promoting athlete agency.

This course consists of 10 lessons. Depending on the learner, each lesson will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete. The course may be taken over multiple sessions, with progress saved automatically. After successful completion, the course will remain accessible for review at any time.

To print course certificates, individuals must have an active USA Gymnastics membership (Recreational Coach, Competitive Coach, Judge, Owner/Managing Director, or Athlete).
