R301: Brain & Body: Beyond Basics

Course Description

R301 covers topics vital to any person who works with children through sports or academics. It reaches beyond simple drills and games, and beyond intuitive coaching and provides better understanding of the process of learning. Perfect for preschool, recreational, developmental coaches, directors, owners and team coaches. There will be some "hands-on" activities, but participants should be prepared for in-depth lecture and discussion.

R301 covers three critical areas:

Understanding the Child covers the first critical years of development. The focus is birth to 5 years of age. Points discussed within this lecture include:

  • the developmental stages of self-perception,
  • levels of thought,
  • learning styles, and
  • how all of these developmental elements impact behavior.
It also covers adaptation of lesson plans and activities appropriate to each stage of development.

Motor Learning, Motor Development and The Theory of Muscle Memory
Expanding on early childhood development, this section covers:

  • the importance of movement in cognitive development and scholastic achievement,
  • sensory integration,
  • motor programming,
  • avoiding training interference,
  • establishing neural pathways for motor learning and rehabilitation
  • motor development over a life-span,
  • critical components of movement such as progressional training, and
  • understanding the theory of "muscle memory"
Special People: Special Needs focuses on understanding the Autism Spectrum Disorders but also includes:
  • brain structure, function and behavioral effects associated with brain injury
  • activities to incorporate into movement classes for special needs
  • tips on class management for successful special needs classes
  • Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Dystonia,
  • safety and management for seizure-prone children
The course will take approximately five hours to complete.

    • 1st Registrant: $65
    • 2nd - 6th - Registrant: $59/person
    • 7th - 11th - Registrant: $55/person
    • 12th - 19th - Registrant: $49/person
    • 20th+ - Registrant: $45/person

Policies

REGISTRATION POLICY:
  • Attendees must be USA Gymnastics members (Recreational Coach, Competitive Coach, Judge, Meet Director, Owner/Managing Director, Athlete)
  • Course attendees must be a minimum of 14 years old
  • Attendees aged 18 and older MUST have completed U110: U.S. Center Safe Sport Core course to attend this training.
  • Pre-registration can be done online up to 1 week prior to the scheduled course date.
  • All on-site registrations will be charged a $25 late fee and are not guaranteed course materials or a spot in the course.
TRANSFER POLICY:
  • To transfer a registration to another person, please email education@usagym.org.
  • Transfers can be made up to 1 week before the course date at no cost.
  • Transfers made less than 1 week before the course date, and transfers made onsite, will result in a $30 transfer fee.
CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY:
  • All cancellations must be received in writing at education@usagym.org.
  • Cancellation requests received more than 2 weeks before the course date will result in a 50% refund.
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than two weeks before the course date.

USA Gymnastics University

The R301 Brain & Body: Beyond Basics is an elective course in the School of Recreation within the USA Gymnastics University.

Upon completion of the course, members can print out a certificate of course completion on their USA Gymnastics "My Profile" page. (Please allow 3-4 weeks) To print course certificates, individuals must have an active USA Gymnastics membership (Recreational Coach, Competitive Coach, Judge, Owner/Managing Director, or Athlete).

Non Members registering under a Member Club will not obtain university credit or a certificate. If membership is obtained after the course, university credit and certificates will be granted.
