Chainey was a member of the 1996 Olympic Team that finished fifth, the best showing for the men's Olympic Team since 1984. He is a four-time World Championships team member from 1989 through 1996. He took fifth place on high bar at the 1996 World Championships. At the 1994 Goodwill Games, he was given an award for "Most Impressive Performance" on high bar. Sports Illustrated featured him in "Faces in the Crowd" in early 1994. He and his younger brother, Greg, were both gymnasts at UCLA. Umphrey was the UCLA Team Captain in 1991 and 1993, and also the UCLA Team Mentor. He was awarded the 1993 Hilton Bounce-Back Award for his tremendous recovery from an ankle injury. Umphrey graduated from UCLA in the fall of 1994 with a degree in physiological science. He is a 1988 cum laude graduate of Albuquerque Academy and was awarded the honor of Youth Role Model of the Year in 1987.
