Sohn is a pommel horse specialist. He qualified to his third World Championships team by, once again, winning pommel horse at the 1996 Winter Cup Challenge. He competed collegiately at Penn State and won the pommel horse event final four successive years (1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991) at the NCAA National Championships. Sohn was only the second gymnast in NCAA history to accomplish this on an individual event. He scored seven 10.00's on pommel horse in his competitive career.
