Roth won his first international all-around title at the 1995 Visa Challenge. He was coached by his father throughout his high school career. Roth is the all-time leader in EIGL titles winning nine championships while at Temple University. He made U.S. Championships history in 1990 when he scored the first 10.00 with his optional high bar routine. Roth's bounty of five gold medals at the 1990 Olympic Festival tied the record for gymnastics set in 1983 by Olympian Scott Johnson. He also holds the record of highest score on the high bar at an Olympic Festival with a 9.9. Roth spent the 1991 and 1992 seasons rehabilitating from chest and knee injuries and came back strong in 1993, finishing sixth all-around at the 1993 Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships.
