David's performance at the 1996 NCAA Championships made him the first four-time all-American at Cal since 1968; he added two more all-America honors in 1997, bringing his total to six. He received his bachelor's degree in integrative biology from the University of California-Berkeley in December of 1997. David also served as an assistant coach with the Golden Bears men's gymnastics team. He began his competitive career under the tutelage of Kevin Prady, then was coached for one year by Olympian Ron Galimore.
